BLP 'Butterfly' presentation: Low carbon design & decision tool

This presentation is based on the one given as part of the World Green Building Week in September.

BLP is leading this TSB funded project in partnership with Willmott Dixon, UCL Energy Institute and University of Cambridge Centre for Sustainable Development.

'Butterfly' will offer transparency of the effects of system and material choices, by associating those choices with relevant performance data. Ultimately, it will enable comparative decision-making of alternative designs based on attributes of life cycle, operational energy and embodied carbon - the whole carbon cost, for new build and retro fit residential property schemes.

The tool will be an evolution of our successful Life Cycle Costing application, which integrates our construction durability database that has been built up over the last 25 years, and which is already in use amongst industry professionals looking to make design choices on the basis of life cycle cost. In addition to making evaluations based on a series of standard house types and components, the tool will be CAD compatible, enabling designers and developers to upload their own scheme specific designs into Butterfly which will generate the energy calculations and measure the design attributes against industry standards and energy reduction targets. The tool will enable designs to be modified to achieve optimum energy performance measured against capital and life cycle cost.

Date/time: Wednesday 16 November, 08:30-10:00.

Venue: BLP, 90 Fenchurch Street, London, EC3M 4ST.
