Supporting Chauncy Maples
A new co-sponsor - the Mota Engil Group - brings €2m to the project
In October 2010, Malawi Shipping Services, owned by Mota-Engil (the Portuguese international civil engineering company), was granted a 30 year concession to take over shipping services on Lake Malawi and the shipyard in Monkey Bay. Its charitable arm, Fundação Manuel António da Mota, has become a co-sponsor alongside Thomas Miller and will finance €2million of the running costs during the next ten years. So it has joined the partnership between Malawi’s Ministry of Health, The Chauncy Maples Malawi Trust and Thomas Miller. Read press release
We have raised £1,000,000 - we need another - can you help?
Many members of our community have generously helped us get the first £1m towards the renovation costs of Chauncy Maples. We urgently need your help now to raise the second £1m to finance the parts necessary for this project (see panel on the left) – the quicker we raise the money, the sooner we can improve the lives of lakeside Malawians.
Our appeal to you
Thomas Miller has itself conributed £250,000 and another £600,000 has come from its community - clubs, members, business partners andl. We are now seeking to spread this support wider in the maritime community, especially amongst the suppliers of the equipment needed on the vessel.
Thomas Miller chairman, Hugo Wynn-Williams, talks about this challenge and invites you to join us in raising the £2m necessary to make this venture a reality.

Celebrating 125 years
Thomas Miller celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2010. We sought a way to do this which would be imaginative, have the potential to do good and be of universal interest to our community, while having a maritime flavour. We found a unique project which meets all these objectives.
Sponsoring Chauncy Maples - Lake Malawi's Clinic

Chauncy Maples is Africa's oldest motor ship (built 1899 in Glasgow) and has sailed on Lake Malawi since. The Chauncy Maples Malawi Trust, a UK Charity, is raising £2m to renovate the ship as a primary health clinic on Lake Malawi, serving 500,000 of the world's poorest people who have little or no access to medicine. Thomas Miller has agreed to sponsor the project. The needs of lakeside Malawian people combined with the history of Chauncy Maples, not least how she got to Lake Malawi, make this a tremendous endeavour.
This venture is high profile in Malawi and recently the President of Malawi publicly announced the project. Chauncy Maples herself is known to most Malawians and has played an important role in the history and development of Malawi.
